A solid LCD with DVD player: Hitachi L19D103. This 19 inch LCD with built in DVD player was a surprising favorite of the Cleverreviews team. We were not only impressed with this Hitachi’s ability to create sharp and clean images in SD 480p and HD 720p resolution, but were impressed with the low sales price as well. This set’s native resolution is 720p but does a solid job of handling other input resolutions. Sound quality is generally an issue with LCDs with built in DVD players, however we did not experience any issues when it came to sound production or sound quality.

Hitachi’s 19 inch LCD is equipped with a standard built-in ATSC / QAM / NTSC Tuners to handle DTV and analog TV viewing. The Hitachi L19D103 is equipped with standard connection components, with the exception of an HDMI port (a nice feature to find on a TV at this price price point). Our reviewers were very impressed with the television’s display qualities whether watching programming or a DVD via the onboard player. We tested the following DVD formats and did not have any issues: DVD/DVD-R/DVD-RW/CD/CD-R/CD-RW/VCD.

The Hitachi L19D103 is Energy Star 3.0 compliant and will save you money while operating or in stand by mode. The set’s initial set up is simple and easy. A couple of our reviewers were not overly impressed with the Hitachi’s “super clear anti-glare” technology, citing less than ideal glare issues when watching the TV in direct light. However, this issue was not so bad that we could not give the Hitachi L19 high marks. If you are looking for a solidly constructed 19 inch LCD, this Hitachi may be a worthwhile selection. It normally retails for about $350.00, but we have seen it at a few online retailers for about $195. Considering the luck we have had with other Hitachi products, we recommend this television set. With think it would work well in any dorm, RV, or spare bedroom.

Our Latest Review: Proscan32LB45Q. This solidly designed 32” HDTV is packed with features such as full 1080p High Definition resolution and a suite of other elements normally expected to be found with more expensive HD television set. Although our reviewers believed that the display and audio quality are not quite as solid as other flagship brands (i.e. Sony, Panasonic, Samsung), this 32 inch set does a more than adequate job, especially when on considers the cost of the set is less than $500.00.

When it comes to value for the money, this Proscan 32LB45Q is a great deal. We liked the televisions display capabilities at 1080p, 1080i, 720p, as well as standard definition 480p. The screen’s ability to produce strong contrasting colors in dark scenes is fairly solid. The set’s uneven backlight was sometimes noticible in darker action sequences. Outside the backlight issue, we liked the 6ms response speed, its ability to produce clear and crisp images regardless of input resolution, and the channel browser feature that allows viewers to quickly review 32 previously viewed channels as well as screen shots from the previous 5 stations.

The Proscan‘s audio capabilities are strong for most regular viewing applications. Consumers who are looking for this LCD to produce HD quality sound should consider purchasing a sound bar or other exterior surround sound audio equipment. This set does provide users with a number of input/output connections, including 2 HDMI ports, 2 component slots, an S-video, AV, antenna, VGA, and audio input, as well as two audio outputs.

We really liked the number of features and the overall quality of this HD LCD set. Other manufactures can’t compete with the Proscan 32LB45Q‘s price in this mid-sized class of televisions. If you can put up with a few minor issues (inconsistent backlight and minor sound quality issues) in exchange for a great price, this television is a decent choice.

A best seller: The Sharp LC22DV27UT 22 inch LCD HDTV with on board DVD player is a great choice for consumers looking for value from a trusted brand. For consumer familiar with smaller televisions that offer built-in DVD players there are a limited number of choices. Sharp’s competition tends to be either Toshiba, “store brands” or no-name brands, and our reviewers agree that the best choice in this class of televisions is this Sharp. This set’s native resolution is 720p and does a decent job handling 1080i and 480p resolutions. Our reviewers were impressed with the set’s ability to produce rich blacks and bright white colors in HD programming. Regardless of varying light sources (shadows, direct light, etc.) this television produced a clear and bright images. Overall, a great HD and standard definition picture for a 22 inch television.

The Sharp LC22DV27UT utilizes a little more power than other televisions in its class (about 51W) thanks to its on board DVD player. Sound quality on this smaller television is surprisingly clear and solid, it is more than adequate for our test. Initial set up is simple and easy, although a couple of our reviewers found the layout of the remote control a little “counter-intuitive.” Our reviewer’s only common gripe about this set is that its stand is not adjustable, but at this size that should not matter much to most viewers (and if it does a decent adjustable stand can be purchased for about $30.00). If you are looking for a well built, top of the line 22 inch LCD with a built-in DVD, this Sharp is a second to none! It normally retails for about $350, but we have seen it at a few online retailers for about $290. Our reviewers agree this is a great LCD!

Axion’s portable solution: Axion AXN-8701 7-inch LCD TV. This 7″ inch portable television by Axion is a great digital travel television, becoming a top selling television this year! Because of its built in 100 minute battery system and super sensitive digital tuner, viewers can use this television on the road, by the pool, or on vacation. The portable Axion LCD has a nice 7-Inch wide screen active matrix TFT screen and has audio/video inputs to hook up just about anything, including a handy car AC adapter for use on the road. Using the USB port and the 3-in-1 (SD/MS/MMC) card reader also gives you the ability to use it as a digital frame or as a portable music device.

We found the Axion AXN-8701 works best if it is initially set up to a strong antenna (old fashion bunny ears won’t do the trick!) and allow the LCD to find channels utilizing the initial auto scan. If you fail do this, the ability to find channels manually will be limited to those found during the auto scan (regardless of over-the-air signal strength). We were pleasantly surprised by the number of channels (about 40!) we got over the air with this little set. The Axion LCD has also provided a small kickstand that allows the viewer to watch hands free. Although the display is not a high definition (HD) set, it does a great job of displaying standard and HD programming.

Also, the Axion AXN-8701 only works with digital inputs (i.e. over the air, satellite, or digital ready cable) because it is only equipped with an ATSC tuner. This small LCD is not equipped with a DVD player either, so if you are looking for a portable television with a built-in DVD player we suggest selecting another set. Our reviewers generally agreed that the sound quality and volume was sufficient for its small size. Don’t expect great things out of the small twin speakers. We therefore suggest using earphones for enhanced sound quality.

We found the Axion AXN-8701‘s battery life was about what we expected under normal use. We tested the battery under several conditions and the lithium-ion battery generally lasted for an hour and a half to two hours, enough time to watch three programs or a common length movie. In fairness to this television, it does come equipped with a AC power cord and can be connected to a car adapter.

All thing considered, this is one of the best portable digital LCD televisions on the market today. Although it retails at $125.00, we’ve seen it Amazon for about $65 to $75. This is one of the better portable LCDs we’ve tested, our reviewer think its definitely worth the price.

Simply imagine a wider range of colors than you ever thought possible. Also, by being ENERGY STAR compliant you are assured that your Samsung model is helping the environment by using less energy while saving you money.
